Earth First!
Convicted arsonist Rodney Coronado sometimes identifies himself with the Animal Liberation Front, sometimes with Earth First!, and sometimes with Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC). Earth First! and SHAC both joined something called the Coalition for Earth and Animal Liberation to protest the World Economic Forum, and SHAC was one of the groups that sponsored the 2003 Earth First! summer gathering.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals
Working for PETA as an “investigator,” Michelle Rokke first ignited the global SHAC campaign by infiltrating Huntingdon Life Sciences. From October 1996 to May 1997, Rokke was employed at HLS under false pretenses (while also on PETA’s payroll). Her “diary,” detailing various incidences of alleged animal abuse inside Huntingdon, has been denounced by many as an outright fraud. More recently, PETA has issued public appeals on behalf of several SHAC criminals, hoping a deluge of phone calls or faxes will convince prison officials to serve these inmates a special vegetarian-only diet. As we’ve come to expect, PETA has put its money where its mouth is: in 2001, the organization made a $5,000 cash payment to SHAC leader Josh Harper, and back in 1995 PETA paid convicted Animal Liberation Front arsonist $70,400. Coronado now speaks on behalf of SHAC. Also, PETA is no stranger to SHAC’s all-out battle to put medical research laboratories out of business. Until a 1997 court injunction forced them to cease and desist, PETA operated its own aggressive campaign against Huntingdon Life Sciences. Lastly, some of PETA’s officers run in the same circles as SHAC’s more prominent activists; for instance, PETA campaign director Joe Haptas is also an officer with the Northwest Animal Rights Network -- a group whose most prominent member is SHAC leader Jake Conroy.

Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine
The immodestly self-proclaimed and deceptively named Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) has shown a remarkable willingness to support SHAC’s violent brand of activism. In September 2001, PCRM president Neal Barnard personally co-signed a series of letters (on PCRM letterhead) with SHAC Director Kevin Jonas. The letters went to companies in 32 states and 8 foreign countries that (according to SHAC) had business relationships with Huntingdon Life Sciences. While the content of these letters was merely persuasive, any letter from SHAC -- when sent to a medical research professional -- is properly viewed as a threat of bodily harm.
Following the 2002 arrest of SHAC convict Benjamin Persky on criminal mischief charges (a class D felony), SHAC reported that PCRM repeatedly faxed New York’s Riker’s Island, trying to convince Persky’s jailers to serve him a special vegetarian menu.

Sea Shepherd Conservation Society
Convicted arsonist Rodney Coronado has long been involved with the Animal Liberation Front (ALF), which the FBI has identified as the country’s most dangerous domestic terrorist threat, and the special-interest ALF subset known as SHAC. He got his start in the terrorist community by joining SSCS immediately after graduating from high school in 1984. Two years later, he planned and executed a SSCS attack on the Icelandic whaling fleet. SHAC organizer and spokesman Joshua Harper has also served as a SSCS crewmember. He was jailed in 1999 for attacking Native Americans on a whale hunt; Paul Watson’s ex-wife Lisa Distefano and current wife Allison Lance were also charged in that protest.
