In December 2001 a coalition of five activist groups was formed specifically “to fight agribusiness” during the formation of the 2002 Farm Bill in Washington. Called the “National Farm Action Campaign,” this ad hoc federation included both the American Corn Growers Association and the Northern Plains Resource Council. Other members included the National Family Farm Coalition, the Missouri Rural Crisis Center, and Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement.

When the Northern Plains Resource Council held its 1999 annual meeting in Montana, the keynote speaker was Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy president Mark Ritchie. According to the Associated Press, Ritchie told the assembled farmer-activists that the battle against genetically improved food crops was already won. "Should farmers buy or plant GMO grains?" Ritchie asked, rhetorically. "The simple answer is no... This is not about feeding the world."

NPRC has received over $140,000 from the Tides Foundation since 1992. As is typical with Tides, no information has been made available about where this money originated. Tides isn’t required by law to disclose these details, and it isn’t talking.

Western Organization of Resource Councils Western Organization of Resource Councils
The Western Organization of Resource Councils is the parent organization of the Northern Plains Resource Council, although NPRC is an older organization. WORC came into existence after a second “resource council” group was created, and today serves as a networking agent between all of its member organizations. NPRC has representation on WORC’s board, and regularly receives funding from WORC.
