Center for Food Safety Center for Food Safety
EarthSave International president Howard Lyman serves on the Organic Consumers Association’s policy board, and also on the advisory board of the Center for Food Safety. In addition, Lyman is a “National Council” Member of the Farm Animal Reform Movement.

Earthsave International belongs to a coalition, organized by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), called Foodspeak. The coalition’s mission is to fight (or dodge) food disparagement laws and achieve blanket immunity for anything they might say -- however reckless or misleading.

EarthSave International founder John Robbins and president Howard Lyman are both members of the Farm Animal Reform Movement’s “National Council,” as are two other EarthSave advisory board members: Institute for Food & Development Policy co-founder Francis Moore Lappe, and Foundation on Economic Trends anti-technologist Jeremy Rifkin. Vegetarian author and FARM Director Michael Klaper also site on EarthSave’s advisory board. Radio announcer Casey Kasem is a celebrity spokesman for both groups.

Jeremy Rifkin, president of the Foundation on Economic Trends, is a former advisory board member of Earthsave International. The former executive director of Earthsave, Howard Lyman, was previously the executive director of Rifkin's Beyond Beef Campaign, which Earthsave joined as a "supporting organization." Lyman, Rifkin, and Earthsave founder John Robbins all serve on the National Council of the "Great American Meatout," an annual event run by the Farm Animal Reform Movement, an animal rights group.


Humane Society of the United States Humane Society of the United States
The Humane Society of the United States and Earthsave International both lent their name to the Turning Point newspaper ads that attacked modern farming techniques, new technologies, biotechnology, and economic globalization. They were also both members of the Center for Science in the Public Interest’s Foodspeak coalition of groups who hoped to avoid liability for false claims against food companies.


Mothers for Natural Law Mothers for Natural Law
In 1999, Mothers for Natural Law delivered petitions with 500,000 signatures to Congress, asking for a moratorium on the production of genetically improved foods. PCRM and EarthSave were both institutional sponsors of this effort.

PCRM president Neal Barnard serves on EarthSave’s advisory board. Howard Lyman and other EarthSave staffers have appeared at several events in conjunction with PCRM staff, including a March 2001 pro-vegetarian event on Capitol Hill. The two organizations’ advisory boards share six members, including: weight-loss-clinic doctor John McDougall, diet book author Dean Ornish, new age alternative-health guru Andrew Weil, Cornell nutritionist and entrepreneur T. Colin Campbell, Cleveland Clinic consultant Caldwell Esselstyn, and Columbia University education professor Lawrence Kushi. In addition, Barnard, Ornish, and McDougall all sit on the advisory board of Veggie Life magazine. And Barnard, Ornish, and Campbell are on Vegetarian Times’ editorial advisory board, along with EarthSave founder John Robbins. Public Health Advocacy Institute Public Health Advocacy Institute
Michele Simon, a volunteer for EarthSave, is a scheduled speaker at the 2004 Public Health Advocacy Institute conference on "Legal Approaches to the Obesity Epidemic." The previous year's conference was "intended to encourage and support litigation against the food industry" -- an effort Simon has advocated as president of the Center for Informed Food Choices.

The New York chapter of the Sierra Club promotes Earthsave International's "VegPledge" on its website. VegPledge is a campaign designed to scare people into adopting vegetarian and vegan diets. The VegPledge demonizes fishing, fish farms, large-scale livestock farms, and ranching - advising people not to eat any meat at all to "give a break to wild animals."

EarthSave is among the 108 organizations listed as Turning Point Project “coalition” groups, but there’s no evidence to suggest that any of EarthSave’s money (nor that of any of the other “coalition” groups) went into Turning Point’s advertising.
